Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden: Our Romantic Getaway

To say Andre is good at planning romantic dates is an understatement. Our date to Mepkin Abbey was one of the most romantic dates he’s planned so far! Andre and I had the most amazing experience at Mepkin Abbey and we highly recommend it to anyone searching for romantic date spot ideas outside of the Charleston area. He’s taken me on a lot of romantic dates, but this surprise date to Mepkin Abbey was nothing short of magical.

If you’ve never been to Mepkin Abbey, you’re in for a treat. It’s a serene monastery that is known for its beautiful botanical gardens, a peaceful retreat center, and is even a popular spot for weddings. Let’s chat about our unforgettable date at this enchanting place.

The Surprise

It all started on a sunny Saturday morning. Andre and I had been talking about needing a break from our usual routine, so I wasn’t too surprised when he suggested we go out for the day. However, he kept the destination a secret, refusing to tell me where we were going, only that it was somewhere “incredibly beautiful.” After about an hour on the road, we arrived at Mepkin Abbey. I had never heard of it before and was immediately taken aback at how breathtaking it was. As we walked through the gates of Mepkin Abbey, we were immediately surrounded by lush greenery and a sense of calm that’s almost tangible. I was instantly mesmerized by the beauty surrounding us.

Exploring the Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden

Our first stop on the property was the Mepkin Abbey botanical garden. Let me just say, it was breathtaking. As soon as we walked in, I was captivated by the vibrant colors and the fragrant smells of the flowers. The gardens sprawled in front of us, each meticulously maintained, and we could immediately see how much love and care goes into them. We strolled hand-in-hand through the winding paths, admiring the various plants and flowers. There were roses, lilies, and even some exotic plants that I’d never seen before. We even spotted a few butterflies and bees buzzing around, adding to the unbelievably enchanting atmosphere.

It was the perfect setting for a romantic date. The garden had this calming effect that made us forget all our worries and just enjoy the moment. We strolled hand-in-hand through the winding paths, admiring the various plants and flowers. There were roses, lilies, and even some exotic plants that I’d never seen before. Eventually Andre and I found a cozy bench under a large oak tree, where we sat and snuggled for a while just soaking in the beauty around us.

A Peaceful Afternoon at the Mepkin Abbey Retreat Center

After our leisurely walk through the gardens, Andre had another surprise up his sleeve — as always. To my surprise he led me further into the property to a tour of the Mepkin Abbey retreat center. The retreat center is known for its peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place for meditation and reflection. As we took it all in we learned about the history of Mepkin Abbey and the monks who live there. It was fascinating to hear about their daily routines and how they maintain such a serene lifestyle.

The retreat center has several cozy rooms where guests can stay for a few days to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Andre and I made a mental note to come back for a longer stay in the future. We both felt a sense of peace and tranquility as we walked through the retreat, and it was clear that this place had a special energy.

We spent some time exploring the meditation rooms, and eventually sat peacefully in silence and just being present with each other. It was a beautiful experience and something we really want to repeat again soon. The Mepkin Abbey retreat center offers a variety of retreats and workshops, so if you’re looking to deepen your spiritual practice or just need a break from it all, this is the place to be.

Imagining a Mepkin Abbey Wedding

Much to my surprise as we continued our tour of the property we stumbled upon a charming wedding chapel. It was simple yet elegant, with stained glass windows that let in the most beautiful, glowing light. In recent years Mepkin Abbey has become a very popular spot for weddings, and it’s easy to see why. The natural beauty of the surroundings, combined with the peaceful atmosphere, makes it a perfect location for a romantic and intimate ceremony. Andre and I couldn’t help but imagine what a wedding at Mepkin Abbey would be like. We spent some time fantasizing about our own future wedding (wink, wink) and what it would be like to celebrate our love in such a stunning place.

The thought of saying “I do” in such a serene and sacred place was inspiring. For now we kissed under the chapel and vowed to return another day. The idea of a Mepkin Abbey wedding was definitely added to our list of dreamy scenarios.

A Cozy Picnic by the River

After our tour, Andre had one final surprise for me. He had packed a small picnic! We found a grassy spot by the Cooper River, adjacent to the chapel’s charming wedding pergola. The view was spectacular, with the water glistening in the afternoon sun and the magnificent oaks trees providing the perfect amount of shade and breeze around us.

As always Andre had thought of everything – a cozy blanket, delicious sandwiches, fresh fruit, and even a bottle of sparkling water. As we enjoyed our picnic, we talked about our favorite parts of the day, kissed under the wedding pergola and reminisced about how we met and how grateful we were to have each other. It was one of those perfect moments that you wish could last forever.

Reflecting on a Perfect Day

As the sun began to set, the gardens transformed into a golden wonderland. We lingered for a while to take in the views — the boaters passing by, the birds singing above us and all the breathtaking gardens surrounding us. Just after sunset we reluctantly packed up our picnic and made our way back to the car. The day had been absolutely perfect, and I couldn’t have asked for a more romantic date. Andre really outdid himself, and I felt so loved and filled with gratitude for him.

Mepkin Abbey is truly a special place. Whether you’re exploring the botanical gardens, finding peace at the retreat center, or dreaming of a Mepkin Abbey wedding, there’s something seriously magical about this hidden gem. I’m already looking forward to our next visit and can’t wait to make more memories in this beautiful place. If you’re looking for a unique and romantic date idea, I highly recommend taking a trip to Mepkin Abbey. It’s a place where you can slow down, connect with nature, and spend uninterrupted quality time with the one you love. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Planning Your Romantic Date

Now that we’ve set the scene, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of planning your perfect date at Mepkin Abbey botanical garden. Here’s a step-by-step guide to make the most of your romantic day trip.

To start, I recommend starting your day early to make the most of your visit. Andre and I left around 10am, and arrived while it was still quite early, which gave us plenty of time to explore — and we did! The garden opens at 9 AM, and trust me, the morning light filtering through the trees adds an extra layer of magic to the experience. Plus, you’ll have the garden mostly to yourselves before the crowds arrive.

A Bit of History

First things first, a little history lesson courtesy of Andre, one of the biggest history buffs I know (don’t worry, it’s interesting!). Mepkin Abbey is not just any abbey; it’s a Trappist monastery with roots that go back to 1949. These monks belong to the Cistercian Order, and they live by a simple, contemplative lifestyle that can be quite inspiring to witness. But the land itself has a much older story. Mepkin Abbey was originally a plantation before it became a monastery, owned by Henry Laurens, a key figure in the American Revolution. Fast forward to the 20th century, the property was donated to the Trappist monks by Clare Boothe Luce and her husband, Henry Luce – yes, the same Luce who founded TIME magazine.

The Charm of Mepkin Abbey Botanical Gardens

Now let’s talk about what makes Mepkin Abbey botanical garden so special. Mepkin Abbey is a beautifully landscaped monastery with a rich history dating back to the 40’s, but beyond its spiritual roots, the abbey is home to stunning botanical gardens that sprawl across acres of lush, meticulously maintained grounds. The gardens themselves are located along the scenic Cooper River, and let me tell you, the botanical gardens at Mepkin Abbey are something straight out of a fairy tale.

First Stop: Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden

With that said, I suggest starting your date like Andre and I did, with a visit to the Mepkin Abbey botanical garden. This stunning garden is a paradise for nature lovers and offers a romantic backdrop for a leisurely stroll. The gardens are meticulously maintained, featuring a wide array of plants, flowers, and trees. It’s a perfect spot for those Instagram-worthy couple photos.

The gardens are a mesmerizing blend of native and exotic plants and winding trails. Walking hand-in-hand through the garden’s picturesque paths, you’ll encounter vibrant colors and intoxicating scents, from vibrant azaleas and camellias to the soothing greens of ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss. It’s like stepping into a fairy tale, where every turn reveals a new surprise.

Highlights of the Botanical Garden

  • Seasonal Blooms: Depending on the time of year, you’ll witness different plants in full bloom, from vibrant azaleas to delicate camellias. The variety ensures that every visit offers something new and beautiful.
  • Peaceful Pathways: Wander hand-in-hand along the winding paths, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The tranquility of the garden provides a perfect backdrop for intimate chats and quiet moments together.
  • Scenic Views: Several spots in the garden offer breathtaking views of the surrounding river and landscape. Find a bench, sit down, and enjoy each other and the scenic views.
  • Sustainable Living: The gardens are not just for show – the monks also grow vegetables and herbs used in their daily meals. Walking through these gardens, you can’t help but feel a connection to the earth and the simplicity of monastic life.

Stroll and Explore

I can’t recommend enough that you take your time to explore the gardens. This is a perfect place to relax and leave the world behind. Feel free to walk slowly, hand in hand, and savor the beauty around you. And, like Andre, make sure to stop to smell the flowers, literally all of them. There’s no rush — let the serenity of the place wash over you and deepen your connection. The gardens are simply breathtaking and wind together seamlessly. Take time to wander into the meditation garden and the sculpture garden as well, as each are so unique and enchanting.

Exploring the Grounds

After soaking in the beauty of the botanical gardens, take some time to explore the rest of the grounds. The grounds are a mix of gardens, historic buildings, and jaw-dropping views that make you want to take a deep breath and just be. Like I said earlier, the Abbey itself is a functioning monastery, home to a community of Trappist monks so there is quite a lot to explore. The history and architecture of the Abbey really add a unique element to your date, giving you so much to discover and chat about.

Must-See Spots

  • The Abbey Chapel: The chapel is a marvel of simplicity and elegance. I suggest stepping inside to feel the peaceful ambiance wash over you. It’s a wonderful place to sit quietly together, reflecting on your connection as a couple.
  • The Memorial Gardens: These areas offer a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Stroll through the gardens, appreciating the sense of peace and remembering that life’s journey is both beautiful and fleeting.
  • River Views: The Mepkin Abbey sits along the Cooper River. Take a walk down to the water’s edge for some stunning views and perhaps stop for a passionate kiss under the wedding pergola like Andre and I did!

Lunch Break: Picnic or Local Eats

I think we can agree that all that exploring is bound to work up an appetite. Mepkin Abbey doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, but you do have a couple of options for a romantic lunch!

Option 1: Pack a Picnic

I think we can all agree that there’s truly nothing more romantic than a picnic amidst nature, am I right? With that said, I recommend packing a picnic basket with your favorite goodies – think fresh fruit, artisanal cheese, a baguette, and maybe a bottle of sparkling water or wine. Don’t forget a cozy blanket to lounge on. Trust me, there are plenty of picturesque spots to lay down on and enjoy a leisurely picnic together. There’s something undeniably romantic about sharing a meal outdoors, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Option 2: Local Eats

If you prefer a sit-down meal, head to one of the charming local eateries in Moncks Corner. There are some seriously cute spots that offer delicious southern cuisine!

Afternoon Exploring: Mepkin Abbey Retreat Center

After lunch, consider spending some time at the Mepkin Abbey Retreat Center. This part of the Abbey offers retreats focused on spirituality, mindfulness, and inner peace. Even if you’re not there for an official retreat, the atmosphere is nonetheless welcoming — and calming to the soul.

Experiences at the Retreat Center

  • Guided Meditation: Check if there are any guided meditation sessions available. Participating in a session together can be a deeply bonding experience!
  • Quiet Reflection: Find a quiet spot within the retreat center to sit and reflect. Sometimes, just being in each other’s presence in a peaceful environment is enough to deepen your connection.
  • Workshops and Talks: Occasionally, the retreat center hosts workshops and talks on various topics. If there’s one happening during your visit, it could be a great way to experience something new together.

The Mepkin Abbey Chapel

The heart of Mepkin Abbey is its chapel. While the botanical garden is the highlight of Mepkin Abbey, I also recommend you and your date visit the chapel while you’re there. It’s naturally a place of silence and reflection and offers a glimpse into the spiritual life of the monks. The simple, elegant architecture and the peaceful ambiance can be a profound shared experience for you and your date. It’s a place of quiet reflection and prayer, where the monks gather multiple times a day. The architecture is simple yet profound, designed to inspire inner peace, quiet contemplation and bliss.

The Gift Shop

Who doesn’t love a good gift shop? At Mepkin Abbey, the gift shop is a gold mine of goodies — made by the monks. From homemade jellies and jams to handcrafted candles and homemade beer to books on monastic life, there’s something for everyone. Buying something from the gift shop is a great way to support the abbey and take a piece of its serenity home with you.

End of the Day: Sunset and Reflection

Take a Sunset Stroll

As the day winds down, make your way back to one of the scenic spots on the Abbey grounds to watch the sunset like Andre and I did. The soft, warm light creates a romantic atmosphere that’s hard to beat. It’s the perfect way to end your date, walking hand in hand along the river to take in the sunset as the afternoon winds down. The glowing colors of the sky, reflected in the river, will create an unforgettable, magical end to your date.

Why Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden is the Perfect Date Spot

The moment you drive onto the Mepkin Abbey grounds, you’re greeted with an overwhelming sense of peace. It’s like stepping into another world – one where time slows down, and you can finally take a deep breath. The scenery is breathtaking, with sprawling gardens, majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and picturesque views of the Cooper River. Whether you’re strolling through the gardens, exploring the trails, or simply sitting by the river, you’ll find countless spots to relax and reflect. The quietness of the place is only interrupted by the gentle sounds of nature – birds chirping, leaves rustling, and the occasional splash of a duck or fish in the Cooper river.

Sustainable Living

One of the coolest things about Mepkin Abbey is their commitment to sustainable living. The monks practice what they preach, growing their own food, and even raising chickens and bees. They’re dedicated to organic farming and sustainability, making their way of life not just peaceful but also environmentally friendly. It’s a reminder that living simply and harmoniously with nature is entirely possible – and incredibly fulfilling.

Natural Beauty

There’s something inherently romantic about being surrounded by nature. The vibrant colors, the delicate scents, and the sounds of birds chirping create an ambiance that’s both relaxing and inspiring. It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and focus on each other.

Thoughtful Planning

Planning a date at Mepkin Abbey botanical garden shows sincere thoughtfulness and effort. It’s one of the reasons why I fell for Andre, he is so romantic and always plans our dates meticulously! Mepkin Abbey is not your typical dinner-and-a-movie date. By choosing such a unique (and beautiful) location, you’re showing that you value spending quality time and creating special moments together, and if you ask me, that’s priceless.

Visiting Mepkin Abbey: Tips for Your Visit

  • Dress Comfortably: Wear sandals, sneakers or shoes that will be comfy for walking and dress in layers to adjust to the changing temperatures throughout the day.
  • Check the Weather: Make sure to check the forecast before heading out. A clear, sunny day is ideal for a Mepkin Abbey botanical garden visit.
  • Respect the Space: Remember that Mepkin Abbey is a functioning monastery. Be respectful of the monks’ privacy and the serene atmosphere of the garden.
  • Check the Schedule: The abbey has specific visiting hours and times when you can join the prayer services. Make sure to check their schedule online before you go.
  • Dress Modestly: Remember, this is a place of worship so do your best to dress modestly.
  • Respect the Silence: Part of the abbey’s charm is its tranquility. Keep your phone on silent, try to keep your voice low, and respect the peaceful atmosphere.
  • Take Your Time: Don’t rush. Take your time to stroll the grounds, sit in the gardens, and soak in the serenity.
  • Check the Schedule: Make sure to check the Abbey’s schedule before you go, as some areas may be closed for private events or religious observances.
  • Plan Ahead: If you’re planning an overnight retreat, make sure to book in advance. The retreat center is quite popular, and spaces can fill up quickly.
  • Join the Prayers: Even if you’re not religious, attending the prayer services can be a moving experience. It’s a chance to witness the monks’ devotion and perhaps find a bit of peace yourself.

Capture the Memories

Naturally you’ll want to bring a camera or your phone (just remember to put it on silent). The picturesque surroundings make for perfect photo opportunities. Although, I will say, while Andre and I normally take a lot of photographs we refrained from spending too much time capturing photos since we were more tuned into enjoying our date together, reconnecting and recharging so to speak. However, I do recommend snapping a few candid shots of each other, and don’t forget to take a couple selfies to commemorate your romantic day. 😉
